Floodrisk assesment In The Netherlands 53 low-lying areas are enclosed with dikes (so-called dike rings) to protect them from flooding. The Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management installed a special organisation which developed a method to assess the safety against flooding in The Netherlands. This project organisation ‘National Flood Risk Assessment Bureau’ also managed the contracting to several consulting firms for applying this method and executing the national flood risk assessment project.
The project provides a clear insight into the probability and the effects of flooding for each dike ring and the uncertainty in the determination of risks. It also reveals which dike sections and water retaining structures are vulnerable and which cost will be involved in measurements to reduce flood risks.
Lievense together with Alkyon Hydraulic Consultancy, BCC and Iv-Infra which was awarded the assignment to undertake the flood risk assessment for dike rings along the IJssel DElta, Markermeer and Lake IJssel.
Activities:
- review of field data
- assessment of failure probability of dike sections and hydraulic structures
- computation of flooding probabilities
- prediction of damages and casualties
- determination of integrated flood risks
